IT’S FOOD TOUR DAY! This is usually one of our favorite days whenever we travel somewhere. Food is one of the best ways to get to know a culture and we also happen to be food people if you didn’t know. Unfortunately we were not crazy about this food tour that we did especially for 100 euros a person. I think it was a combination of the foods that were selected, along with the portion sizes.

Our first stop was at Holy Burek for the famous Burek. It is essentially this pastry that’s soft on the inside, kind of flaky on the outside and stuffed with something. These particular ones are a little longer than a foot long and are roughly 7-9 euros. Our guide chose to get the spinach and cheese one and we each got a piece that was about 2-3 inches. I’m not really a spinach person but I’ll eat it sometimes. We didn’t have vegetarians in the group so I’m not sure why we didn’t we get the meat options. They had lamb and chicken as options and those sound a lot better to me. We ended up going back after our tour to try the other versions, which were good and a lot better than the spinach one.
At our next stop we had some charcuterie and cheeses. There was a cow, a goat cheese and also one that was similar to feta. The feta like cheese was my favorite. We also had some olives, Dalmatian prosciutto and an orange wine. Essentially you tried maybe one or 2 pieces of each item.
We next went to this small restaurant which had some nice bites and cool plating of the food. We had two small dishes served on shells. One was dirty macaroni, which is pasta with veal in a tomato sauce and cinnamon. This was one of my favorite dishes due to how surprising it was. It had a sweet and savory taste and I’m often all about that. The other dish was the black risotto, which I talked about in the previous post. This version tasted like it had more of a seafood flavor than the previous one I had. We also had this red wine called plavac mali, which is a native Croatian wine. It was a medium to full body with notes of plum and cherry.

As we near the end of the food tour we tried three more items. Oysters are very popular in this city, so we each had one fried oyster, which was probably my favorite bite from the tour. We then tried this small square of squid ink bread with a tuna paste and an anchovy on it. I was not a fan of this. It essentially tasted like bread with mustard and I generally don’t like mustard. I was surprised that the anchovies had such a mild taste, that they barely had any flavor. Our last stop was to a gelato shop which are extremely popular in Dubrovnik, you will see them EVERYWHERE. We each chose two flavors, I chose this Dubrovnik wild orange which is popular there and blackberry goat cheese. The blackberry goat cheese was my favorite of the two.

All in all it was an okay food tour, we did try a variety of foods, but I think there could have been some better options and larger portions.
